Ennis to make her comeback at Heptathlon in Desenzano

British combined events star Jessica Ennis will make her comeback to Heptathlon competitions at the 21st edition of Multistars, the Italian combined events meeting in Desenzano del Garda, the first leg of the 2009 IAAF Combined Events Challenge on the 9 / 10 May.
For Ennis it will be a return to the meeting which launched her international career some years ago when she was still a youth athlete. The young briton, a Commonwealth bronze medallist in Melbourne in 2006, won the Italian meeting in 2007 with 6388 points showing an impressive display in her favourite High Jump event where she set the British record at 1.95 metres. This result was the springboard for a successful 2007 season crowned by a fourth place at the World Championships in Osaka with her lifetime best of 6469 points.

Ennis, who is coached by Toni Minichiello, had an unlucky 2008 season which was ruined by a serious stress fracture on her foot which she picked at the Götzis Hypo Meeting.

In Desenzano, Ennis will face Ghana’s Margaret Simpson, the 2005 Heptathlon World bronze medallist and 2002 Commonwealth bronze medallist in Manchester. Simpson, who gave birth to a child in 2006, has just made her comeback to competitions at the African Combined Events Championships in Mauritius where she took the gold medal with 5667 points and will be looking to qualify for the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Berlin (15-23 Aug 2009) at the Italian meeting.

Simpson, who trains at the IAAF High Performance Centre in Mauritius, won two editions of the Multistars in Desenzano in 2003 and 2005 and set her PB of 6423 points in Götzis in 2005.
